Somerset golfer honoured with top England Golf award

A Somerset golfer who has shared her love of the game for over half a century has been honoured with England Golf’s Lifetime Service Award.

Jenny Hobbs of Bath Golf Club was presented with the award – sponsored by Your Golf Travel - at a glittering ceremony last night at Lord’s when the spotlight shone on great moments and achievement at all levels of English golf.

She was honoured alongside Olympic champion Justin Rose, Masters champion Danny Willett and Solheim Cup player Charley Hull as well as other players and heroes from the grass roots game.

Jenny, who is featured in a specially filmed video, was recognised for her decades-long contribution of inspiring fellow players, encouraging juniors and supporting her club, county and country.

“If she had been paid for the hours given to golf she would be a rich woman,” said Bath Ladies’ Captain Louise Buxton. “When Jenny reaches heaven if there is no golf course she will set about its organisation!”

Jenny remarked: “I’m absolutely overwhelmed, this is marvellous and terribly exciting!” Her award includes a one-night stay with two rounds of golf, for four people at a UK Marriott Hotel and Country Club, given by Your Golf Travel.

She first learned golf as a school leaver, taught alongside a neighbour’s son at a local municipal course by a professional/greenkeeper. “All I remember is that he used to wear a long coat but he gave us jolly good lessons and I have been passionate about golf ever since.”

She cherishes the friendships made and the health benefits gained. “I would recommend it rather than depending on the NHS,” she added.

Jenny, 83, has been a member of Bath Golf Club since 1969 and is known throughout club, county and region as an unstinting volunteer.

At the club, she’s been ladies’ captain three times, has sat on the general committee and still organises the ladies’ friendly matches.

In the ladies’ centenary year in 1983 she played 100 holes in a day to raise funds for the celebrations. Then, at the age of 80, she played 80 holes in a day to raise over £1300 for the captain’s charity!

Jenny has been closely involved with the county association, playing second team golf and serving as Somerset President before being made a life member. She’s also a keen supporter of the Bristol and District Ladies Golf Alliance and of South West golf, with many particularly fond memories of her days on the regional committee. At national level, she has been involved with training England teams.

What’s more, she’s still a winning golfer who collected three trophies last season!

Captains Drive In

by Office

on Fri March 24, 2017

Ninety members of Bath Golf Club turned out in very windy conditions on Sunday 19th October to play in a Bowmaker event that followed the traditional “Four Captains Drive-In”.

Club Captain Stan Frith, Ladies’ Captain Louise Buxton, Seniors’ Captain Paul Suchley & Juniors’ Captain Liam O’Mara all managed to get their inaugural drives safely off the tee and away up the first fairway. At registration all members were invited to guess the distances driven by the four captains and prizes were awarded to the members guessing the correct distances.

From a shotgun start and overcoming tricky weather conditions, including 50 mph gusts of wind, the Competition was won by the fourball of Tony Jones, Kieran Bye, Andrew Lapham & Lin Fricker with a very good score of 91 points.

Following the round, the 90 players enjoyed a refreshing glass of bubbly before firstly watching a video that showed one of their members, Jenny Hobbs, being presented by England Golf with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Services to Golf. Jenny is 83 and given the incredible history of services rendered to golf in the region, she is very deserving of the award. An auction was then held which raised £1200 for the 2017 Joint Captains’ Charity - the RUH Forever Friends, Cancer Unit Appeal

Bath Men and Ladies excel!

on Sat September 10, 2016

Excellent news this week for both our men's and ladies' teams.

Firstly, on Sunday 14th August Bath 1st played their final match away against Saltford and won 3-2.

Pete Forster & Richard Longhurst won 2up

Simon Harris & Stefano Maio won 5&4

Nigel Crichton & Jim Brown lost 1 down

Andy Cottle & Spencer Sinden won 3&1

Kelvin Green & Martin Cashnella lost 3&2

Now with all games completed Bath 1st team are division 3 champions and promoted into the second division! Congratulations and very well played by all who have contributed this season.

Our Lady Captain, Alison Rushgrove, is also very proud and delighted to tell you that last Friday Bath GC Ladies – Veronica Creed, Paula McLaurin, Michelle Green, Linda Hill, Stephanie Anderson, Jill Carter and Jo Joliffe – resoundingly beat Lansdown GC Ladies 6:1 to go through to the final of the Somerset Ladies County Golf Association interclub knock-out, the Rogers Cup.

They were supported by Mags Ashman-Marr, Pip Donnithorne, Stephanie Moorfoot and Anita Bye who all acted as caddies for the match. There was a tremendous amount of team spirit and camaraderie and we felt instinctively that it was going to be our day. That does not mean it was easy! There was a fearsome wind and the conditions were tough. The girls had to play some great golf and remain focused and determined until the game was won. Our opposition were going for a hat-trick of Rogers Cup wins so certainly did not want Bath Ladies to get in their way! But get in their way we did – you can see from the photograph just how pleased we were.

Bath Ladies will face Mendip Spring GC Ladies in the final which will be played at Farrington Golf Club on Sunday 4th September.
